Birth of a No. 1 Brand
- Date: May 8, 1886
- Place: Atlanta, Georgia, USA
- Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist, produced the syrup for Coca-Cola.
- It was sold at Jacobs’ Pharmacy for 5c a serving.
- "Delicious and Refreshing" - Carbonated water was teamed with the new syrup - a
- theme that continues to echo today
The Candler Era
- Prior to his death in 1888, Dr. Pemberton sold his remaining interest in Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler.
- By 1892, Mr. Candler's flair for merchandising boosted sales of Coca-Cola syrup nearly tenfold!
A Man Named Woodruff
- 1919 - Ernest Woodruff and W. C. Bradley purchased The Coca-Cola Company for $25 million.
- 4 years later, Robert Woodruff, his son, led the Coca-Cola business to unrivaled heights of commercial success.
- With the vision of Coca-Cola as an international product, he established the global momentum that eventually carried Coca-Cola to every corner of the world.
Refreshing the World
- Upon the US entry into World War II, Woodruff ordered that "every man in uniform gets a bottle of Coca-Cola for 5 cents, wherever he is and whatever it costs the Company."
- From the mid-1940s until 1960, worldwide bottling operations nearly doubled.
- As the world emerged from a time of conflict, Coca-Cola emerged as a worldwide symbol of friendship and refreshment.
The concept of bottling allowed all corners of the world to enjoy Coca-Cola.
- First bottling plant - Chattanooga, Tennessee (1899), followed by the second in Atlanta the following year.
- 1899 - 1919: Number of bottling plants grew to more than 1,000! - 95% locally owned and operated.
- Development of high-speed bottling machinery and increasingly efficient transportation enabled bottlers to serve more customers with more products.
Today, the Coca-Cola bottling system is one of the world’s largest production and distribution networks.
- The Bottling Investment Group (B.I.G.) was established to improve accountability and drive performance of Company Owned & Managed Bottlers (CBOs). Singapore’s F&N Coca-Cola is one such CBO.
- The group serves diverse customers and consumers in both developed and emerging markets across 5 continents.
This allows us to focus on strengthening our brands and conduct business on a worldwide scale while maintaining a local approach.
